I’ve been working on a few gardening ideas to extend my vertical garden growing space (SEE THE VERTICAL WIRE FENCE TRELLIS BUILD). This window box idea developed out of a need to simplify the process for mowing the gardens–I was tired of moving them from the ground every other week.
You could try hanging these window boxes with zip ties, but I wasn’t sure if they would hold up over time in our high heat and UV-rays in SC… most plastic gets destroyed in a season. You may not have that problem and could lower the cost of creating these, unless they start to bow in the middle from the weight of soil and water over time, at which point you may want to consider adding support.
Instructions and links to products can be found below. I’ve included information for the cattle panel trellis as well, since so many ask about those every year.

VERTICAL TRELLIS WINDOW BOX GARDENS PROJECT LIST:

TOOLS:
TOOLS:
- Steel Post Driver
- Pliers for T-Post Connectors
- Flip your plastic window boxes upside down and drip a few holes to allow for proper drainage. Fill each with desired soil for growing.
- Hang 2-3 retail grid hooks in an even height so the window boxes will lay level on top of them. Tip: These only fit on the cattle panel trellis with the trellis facing a certain way, with the cross bars on the back.
- Take one bungee cord and place one hook around a trellis cross bar, wrapping the flexible bungee around the window box, holding it in place by connecting the second hook on the other side.
- Level the window box and bungee cord to your liking so they sit flat, if needed.
- Plant window boxes like normal.
