MY JOURNEY WITH CHICKENS

APRIL 2017

THE "CHUNKY CLUCKERS"
The Original Five Chickens that Helped Create the Lil Urban Farm

I started raising chickens with my first flock (pictured above) back in 2017. I lovingly called the original five ladies my “Chunky Cluckers.”

They were named after female chefs:

  • Paula Dean (Cinnamon Queen)
  • Alice Waters (who became Alessandro, our androgynous diva who passed suddenly)
  • Ina Garten (Speckled Dominique)
  • Julia Child (Barred Rock)
  • Rachel Ray (Rhode Island Red)

Unfortunately, even though I lived in a small city at the time, a predator found its way in and took out each of my feathered friends, one by one. I was using a used pre-fabricated house that was wearing out. No matter what I implemented the predator found its way to my girls. It was heartbreaking to come out day after day to find another one missing or unalived, which is why I made sure to get a super secure, metal fenced structure for my current coop run area.

MARCH 2021

After I lost my first flock to a predator and moved to my new location in 2021, I started my second flock with the six lovely “Lil Bits”:

  • Sandra (Americana)
  • Ruth (Rhode Island Red)
  • Sonya (Olive Egger/Welsummer Mix)
  • Hillary (Golden Comet), A.K.A. “Miss Chickie”
  • Kamala (Cinnamon Queen)
  • Michelle (Gold-Laced Wyandotte)

FEBRUARY 2023

These two troublesome turkeys are the chickens I adopted because their owner passed away and no one knew what to do with them. So I ran around with the neighbors trying to catch them, and eventually succeeded in bringing them home to the “Lil Urban Farm.” I named them Thelma and Louise because they were “on the run” and hard to catch.
