I’ve been wanting to build out a shaded, forested area so I could start playing with mushroon cultivation.
After Hurricane Helene came through and knocked down several dozen trees, I figured now might be a good time to get moving! And Feb/March are the best time for mushrooms where I live because the trees are waking from dormancy and the saps are flowing, which spread the mycelium.
I ordered my wood chips last fall/early winter because it was right after the hurricane. I had a feeling there might be a lot of downed trees, so I placed a ChipDrop order and got them the NEXT day! I simply asked the guy what trees were in there (he said mostly elm and a little tulip poplar, but all hardwood). It was a perfect combo for mushrooms so I ordered wine caps and oysters to start using them.
We will know if this works in 3-6 months!
I also inoculated some shitake mushroom plugs in some recently downed persimmon logs from the hurricane, and set up some wash baskets for oyster mushrooms. Vids coming as soon as I can edit those.
