Build a simple wire trellis to grow vertical

How to build a simple wire trellis on large fence posts to take advantage of unused space to expand vertical garden spaceโ€ฆ

As gardeners, weโ€™re always looking for ways to expand our garden spaces. My trellises already had several items planted and I wanted to plant more beans this yearโ€ฆ so this is how I decided to expand my space behind the asparagus patch.

Below you will find a basic project list of items if you would like to try building one yourself. You can also get hardware items to pull more tension, but I didnโ€™t think it would be necessary for this project (thought it might be needed if you grow heavier squash or melons).

You can also use string or another type of wire for this.

    WIRE TRELLIS PROJECT LIST:

    1. Measure 6-inch marks up both fence posts, matching on each side, and measured approximately 1-inch in from the edge.
    2. Drill holes using the 5/32 drill bill for placing the eye hooks.
    3. Screw an eye hook into each hole.
    4. To the loose end of the coated wire add a crimping sleeve and then loop the end of the wire back through the eye hook, bringing the end of the wire back around to push it into the other side of the crimp.
    5. Take pliers or crimping tool and squeeze the crimp around the wire in a few places to hold it.
    6. Pull the other end of the wire across to the other eye hook on the opposite post (can cut it to for ease of working with it, but make sure you leave enough room). Using one set of pliers to pull the cable as tight as possible (or recruit a friend), repeat the same process for attaching the crimp to the wire (through the eye hook).
    7. Cut the end of the wire using strong wire cutters.
    8. Repeat the process for each layer of your trellis.
