Time to start seeds for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant, but don’t plant outside yet!
It is finally time for us to start seeds for tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant in Zone 7B-8A.
But a note of caution… it is still a bit early to plant directly outside. Our last projected frost date is April 6, according the The Farmer’s Almanac. This means we could still get freezing temps that might destroy them. You want to wait for the weather to warm up, especially at night, and watch for a steady average soil temp of about 60 degrees. In my example, there was a recent fluctuation so I don’t see good stability in the temps yet.
This is why I generally wait until May to transplant those. Otherwise, these tropical, heat-loving plants could stop growing consistently because they can get “stunted.” I like to start them inside to control their conditions. I wait to transplant outside so my plants get a few weeks of growth to build healthy, robust structures. Plus, usually my garlic is in the way anyway, so it’s a waiting game for available space. 😂
